Abai Kunanbaev - named in honor of Abay (Ibrahim) Kunanbayev (1845-1904), a great Kazakh poet, the founder of modern Kazakh written literature, a supporter of the rapprochement of enlightened liberal Islamic culture with Russian and European culture. He was born on August 10 in the family of Kunanbai, the senior sultan of the Karkaraly district, on Chinggis Mountain in the Semipalatinsk region. Abai's family was from a noble family. His grandfather (Uskenbay) and his grandfather's father (Yrgyzbay) were rulers and judges in their clan. The name "Ibrahim" given by his father was replaced by the name "Abai" ("careful", "thoughtful"), affectionately called by his mother. He spent his whole life with this name and went down in history.
Abay first studied at the village mullah, then studied at the Ahmet Riza madrasa in Semipalatinsk. In addition, he attended the Russian school and got acquainted with the works of great personalities such as Pushkin, Lermontov, Krylov, Tolstoy, Goethe, Byron. He also got a lot of knowledge from Eastern literature. Abai's creative heritage is a priceless treasure in the spiritual development of the Kazakh people. He wrote more than 170 poems and left 45 prose philosophical works called "Black words". In these black words, Abay deeply touched on the issues of morality, morality, justice, education, work, national identity, religion and country management. These works changed the worldview of the Kazakh people and showed a new spiritual path.
In his works, Abai urged people to get rid of ignorance and strive for science and education. He criticized laziness and laziness and promoted such noble qualities as work, honor, love, and justice. In addition, Abai's compositional side is also special. He is the author of several songs, among them there are such works as "Black in my eyes", "Bright moon on a windless night", "Eight legs". Abai also made a great contribution as a translator. He recited Pushkin's "Letter of Tatiana", works of Lermontov and Goethe, Byron in Kazakh. Through Abai's translations, the Kazakh reader got acquainted with the best examples of world literature.
Abai's name and heritage are widely recognized not only in Kazakhstan, but throughout the Turkic world. In 1995, its 150th anniversary was celebrated at the international level within the framework of UNESCO. In 2020, on the eve of the 175th anniversary, the "Year of Abay" was announced in Kazakhstan, and various scientific and cultural events were organized. Today, there are schools, universities, theaters, streets and districts named after Abay. Monuments dedicated to Abai have been erected in Almaty and Astana. In addition, one of the central stations of the Almaty metro is called "Abai".
Abai died at the age of 60, and was buried near his Zidebay winter village near Chingistau. Today, the avenue named after Abai is 9400 meters long and was named after him in 1955. It starts from Abay Square, passes by the National Library of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and extends from the Central Stadium to the stadium. Includes Auezov, Bostandyk, Medeu, Almaly districts of the city. The former name of the avenue is Arychnaya, then Michurin street.
